Stanley Anderson (1884-1966)

Stanley Anderson was born in Bristol in 1884. At the age of fifteen he became an apprentice to his father and worked as a decorative engraver of ornamental silver—learning to engrave on metal with exacting precision. The artist’s first recorded etching is dated 1906. In 1909 Anderson won the British Institute Scholarship in etching and moved to London to study with Frank Short. Developing his own distinctive style of drypoint etching, Anderson concentrated primarily on architectural compositions and the urban landscape until the 1920s. From 1934 until his last engraving in 1953 he worked primarily in the country, focusing on craftsmen and countryside as the main subject for both his prints and watercolors.
