Ralph Steadman (b.1936)

British-born cartoonist and caricaturist Ralph Steadman was born on the 15th of May 1936. After training at East Ham Technical College and the London College of Printing he began doing freelance work for magazines and newspapers such as Punch, Private Eye, the Daily Telegraph, New York Times and Rolling Stone. He went on to diversify into book illustration including classics such as ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘Animal Farm’. He has also written and illustrated his own books including two on the lives of Sigmund Freud and Leonardo Da Vinci. He is perhaps most famous for his collaborations with American writer Hunter S. Thompson, together they created Gonzo journalism of which the definitive book in the genre is ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’. He is also an accomplished printmaker and has worked in the mediums of Screenprint, Etching and Lithography since the 1970s.
