Griggs, F.L. (1876-1938), 'Mortmain', Etching, 1918.

Signed in pencil 'F.L. Griggs' lower right and inscribed ….22.III (The best state of the plate One of 40 impressions) bottom left. Titled, in pencil, on verso in the artist’s hand. Printed in black ink on laid paper. One of forty impressions in the third state of four.

The subject is a deserted and decaying moated grange. This was the print which Harold Wright recorded was returned by a purchaser saying that it had been sold under false pretences; the plate did not represent a real building. Griggs was apparently ‘incensed and amused.’
