‘1st state 25 Artist’s proofs . 2nd state ‘Called “before letters” –a term which applies equally to the First state. The number of impressions was again 25.’

This impression is probably what the Printseller’s Association categorized a proof before letters.
‘Begun by the end of February 1830 but laid aside until the summer of 1832 or later: not published until 1849.’

Overlooking Canvey Island Southend and the north Thames marshes, Hadleigh Castle is about five miles west of Southend.
