Mezzotint by David Lucas, as directed by John Constable, printed on laid paper.
Finished in 1829. Described as ‘Perfect and might be printing’ in January 1830. Published in part II of English Landscape Scenery in 1831.
Old Sarum was the site of William the Conqueror’s court, which established the feudal system.
Constable made two versions of the plate S. 8 and S. 32. The second plate, begun in 1831 and completed by 1833, was made because Constable was dissatisfied with the terraces in the first version.
