Mezzotint by David Lucas, as directed by John Constable.
The subject is Stratford Mill, on the Stour. Also known as ‘Young Waltonians’, a reference to Izaak Walton’s ‘The Young Angler’. Later impressions were dedicated to ‘Every Lover of Angling’.
Shirley writes in his catalogue: ‘Begun in the second half of 1834, but quite possibly given over as a result of a quarrel between Constable and Lucas (though by then it had been composed) at the end of that year. Published by Lucas.’ 1840.
Lifetime impressions of this engraving are extremely rare.
