Clavering is in Essex; Griggs visited the village in 1919 with friends, one of whom wrote to R L Hine in 1942 that Griggs had made there 'one or two very rough by decisive sketches, on the backs... of old letters which he had in his pocket'. These were not worked onto copper for 15 years.
