Signed ‘E. McKnight Kauffer 1922’ and inscribed on the backing sheet ‘(original woodcut) For Mr and Mrs Watersten (not an Xmas present but a late specimen of my work) EMcKK’.
Printed on laid Japan paper.
This woodcut is closely based on Kauffer’s oil painting ‘Sunflowers’ (1917), now in the collection of the V & A. The bold design, clean handling and the angular simplifications and distortions of the drawing, reveal Kauffer’s awareness of Post-Impressionist French and Italian art. Here he chooses to represent a subject famously treated by Van Gogh in a style modified by Cubism. It is possible Kauffer saw Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ at Roger Fry’s 1910 Post-Impressionist Exhibition at the Grafton Galleries.
