Lithograph from 'An Alphabet'. Published by William Heinemann in 1898. Printed on wove paper.
'B for Beggar' is a portrait of James Pryde, who produced work with Nicholson in partnership under the name of the Beggarstaff Brothers. Campbell notes ‘the indigent beggar was intended as a sardonic comment on the shiftless existence at this time of Nicholson’s erstwhile partner, and
it is perhaps no accident that the prominent beggar’s staff (Beggarstaff) is shown as Pryde’s sole support’.
