Palmer, Samuel (1805-1881), 'The Lonely Tower', Etching, 1879

'The Lonely Tower', Etching, 1879

Please Note: This item is not for sale.
A beautiful proof impression on wove paper. Signed lower right of the plate 'Samuel Palmer' and inscribed lower left 'Trial Proof'. Bearing the stamp A.H.P Private Press.

Inscribed 'A.P. Club A, 21 March 1879' on verso.

Inscribed on mount ‘Third trial proof’…’The Lonely Tower’ “From Yonder ivy mantled tower”.

A.H. Palmer records no fewer than fourteen bitings of the plate hence there are several progress proofs.

(The plate was cancelled in 1880 after the Etching Club edition and the 7th state was printed after the cancellation of the plate. In the 1920s Henry Macbeth Raeburn restored it, removing most of the traces of the scored lines of cancellation (and with them much of the silhouette of the ‘druidic stones’). An edition was not printed until 1954, when Mary Sholten printed 5 proofs and a numbered edition of 25 on cream wove paper, though these did not come onto the market until 1994).
