Etching printed on thick wove paper. Signed by the artist in pencil 'S.Palmer' lower right of plate and inscribed in pencil lower left '173 Lonely Tower'. Bearing blindstamp lower left of paper, A.H.P. Private Press. Inscribed verso in pencil 'AP club 7, 19 May 1879' verso.

One of a small group of trial proofs printed by A.H. Palmer on his printing press, prior to the edition printed for the etching Club in 1880.

Other known examples include: Working proof inscribed verso in pencil, ‘Club G 11th June. Mr Head 1879. Exhibited V&A, 1926, No. 219. Another impression, sold by Gerrish Fine Art, inscribed verso ‘AP club 21 March 1879’.

The subject incorporates the landscape, seen from the artist’s room, in Furze Hill House, Redhill.

The Lonely Tower is regarded by many as Palmer’s finest etching.
