Palmer, Samuel (1805-1881), 'The Skylark', Etching, 1857

'The Skylark', Etching, 1857

A fine and rare proof impression on chine applique, before the plate was cut down (plate measures 12.5 x 11.5 cm) and prior to the published version in 'Etchings for the Art Union' (1857).

The refined spirit of this little gem of art and poetry baffle words of description. Ineffable is the way in which the rays the sun interpose between us and the ribbed clouds of fugitive night, giving an idea of palpitation in perfect accord with the outpouring of the voice the bird, and the awakening landscape.
