Linen scarf designed by Picasso to commemorate the Global Festival of Youth held in Moscow in 1957. Very rare in such good condition with fresh colours. Picasso frequently designed posters or scarves to aid causes he believed to be important.
The 6th World Festival of Youth and Students opened in Moscow on the 28th of July 1957. It was of great importance historically as it marked the first time the Soviet Union had opened up its doors to the rest of the world under the bold political changes initiated by Nikita Khrushchev.
‘For two weeks beginning on July 28, 1957, an estimated 30,000 foreign youth in their twenties and thirties attended the Moscow Youth Festival… for a short spell, Picasso’s doves of peace replaced the otherwise ubiquitous hammer and sickle’.
