The woman in the doorway was reputedly a Thames steamer captain's wife who knitted as she waited for him to pass on the river each day. Roussel's title refers to Ulysses' wife, Penelope, who occupied her time with weaving while she waited for husbands return.
The composition, with a figure in a darkened doorway, is one favoured by Whistler in etchings from the 1850s to the 1890s. it is likely that Roussel was aware of these subjects among his friend and mentors works.
