Smith, Percy Delf (1882-1948), 'The Dance of Death, 1914-18', Etching, 1919

'The Dance of Death, 1914-18', Etching, 1919

£18,000.00
The complete set of seven etchings in their original presentation portfolio with original labels.

Each print is signed and titled by the artist in pencil. Numbered ‘Set No. 11’ from the edition of 100.

In October 1916 Smith joined the Royal Marines Artillery at the Somme. This set of etchings is based on drawings Smith made at Thiepval on the Somme. They combine realistic depictions of the trenches with the traditional allegorical figure of Death as a skeleton wrapped in a cloak.

The series has been compared to Dix’s portfolio ‘Der Krieg’ and is unsparing in its anti-war sentiment.

The seven plates comprise:
1. Death Intoxicated
2. Death Awed
3. Death Marches
4. Death Forbids
5. Death Ponders
6. Death Refuses
7. Death Waits
