Turner, J.M.W. (1775-1851), 'Berry Pomeroy Castle' or 'Raglan Castle', Etching & Mezzotint, 1816.

'Berry Pomeroy Castle' or 'Raglan Castle', Etching & Mezzotint, 1816.

Drawn and engraved by J.M.W. Turner. From the 'Liber Studiorum'. Printed on laid paper.

The location of this scene has been the source of much speculation in the Liber literature. Turner listed ‘Berry Pomeroy’ among his E.P. subjects in the ‘Liber Notes sketchbook’ and since the publication of Finberg’s 1924 catalogue it has been known by that name. However Charles Stokes identified it as Raglan. In addition there exists a preliminary drawing inscribed ‘Ragland’ in what appears to be Henry Vaughn’s hand.

Etching, not claimed by Turner in the lettering, is generally claimed by H. Dawe.
