Printed on heavy wove paper. Bearing the Rawlinson collection blind-stamp.

Extensively touched, scraped and with pencil instructions by Turner, with note below, ‘The Town is not full enough of work or the Castle. At upper left corner, within the image, ‘Light clouds wanted’.

Described in Rawlinson: ‘Sky and clouds with extensive scraping; cliffs heavily scraped and with pencil touching and heavy shading in graphite or a possible application of a grey watercolour; before sky, right, was lightened; pencil touching on boats and sea, right and rowing boat, centre; pencil touching on hulk on beach and figures to the left; sea heavily scraped throughout; sails on boat, left, scraped as are the cliffs above; mast on top of the mound, left, added in pencil and with pencil touching on slope below; before many additions, and alterations, to the town buildings.’


An outstanding example of a Turner ‘touched proof’.
